Before buying hardware, you need to decide on the types of fixtures you want to use. You can use knobs, pulls, or a combination of both:

  • Knobs: Knobs are single-screw fasteners. They are typically smaller, round, square, or T-shaped. Because they require only a single hole, they are much easier to install and replace. Knobs are traditionally used on cabinet doors, but they can also be used on smaller drawers.

For large drawer fronts (24 inches and wider), a single centered pull can look too small and cause the drawer to bind when pulled from one side. In these cases, finish carpenters use the **1/6th rule** to place two pulls:

Pull Center Location = Drawer Width / 6

For example, on a 30-inch wide drawer, you would place the center of the left pull 5 inches from the left edge, and the center of the right pull 5 inches from the right edge.

5. Step-by-Step DIY Drilling Guide

Once you have calculated your hole positions with our tool, follow these steps to drill them cleanly:

Required Tools and Materials

  • Power drill & 3/16-inch drill bit (standard cabinet screw size)
  • Pencil & tape measure
  • Cabinet hardware template jig (commercial or homemade)
  • Painter's tape (to prevent paint chipping and make markings visible)
  • C-clamps with protective rubber pads
  • Scrap wood block (for backing block)

Step 1: Prep and Tape the Cabinet Front

Apply a piece of painter's tape over the area where you will be drilling. This protects the cabinet finish from scratches and prevents the paint or wood grain from chipping (called blowout) when the drill bit enters.

Step 2: Mark Your Drill Holes

Using the coordinates from our calculator, measure and mark the exact center of each hole on the tape using a sharp pencil.

Step 3: Clamp the Scrap Wood Backing Block

This is the most important step for a clean result:

Clamp a scrap block of wood tightly against the back of the drawer or door front, directly behind your drill marks.

As the drill bit exits the backside of the cabinet door, the pressure of the bit can tear the wood fibers or blow out the paint finish. Having a solid backing block keeps the fibers pressed flat, resulting in a perfectly clean exit hole.

Step 4: Drill Straight and True

Place your drill bit on your mark. Keep the drill perfectly perpendicular (90 degrees) to the cabinet face. If the drill tilts, the handle screws will not align correctly. Drill straight through the face and into your backing block.

Step 5: Mount the Hardware

Peel off the painter's tape. Insert the cabinet screws from the back of the door and thread them into the handle. Tighten them using a screwdriver. Avoid using a drill to tighten the screws, as you can easily strip the threads or crack the cabinet finish.
