Understanding Roofing Measurements: Squares vs. Bundles

The roofing industry uses specific terminology that can be confusing for DIYers. The two most important terms to understand when buying materials are squares and bundles.

  • What is a Roofing Square? A square is a standardized unit of measurement equal to exactly 100 square feet of roof area (for example, a 10 ft by 10 ft section). When roofing contractors give quotes or estimate materials, they almost always speak in terms of squares, not square feet.
  • What is a Bundle? Asphalt shingles are packaged in bundles so they can be safely carried up a ladder. For most architectural and 3-tab asphalt shingles, there are exactly 3 bundles in one square. This means each bundle covers roughly 33.3 square feet. Note: Extremely heavy luxury shingles or slate may require 4 or 5 bundles per square due to weight limits.

How Does Roof Pitch (Slope) Affect Square Footage?

If you only know the footprint (ground area) of your home, you cannot simply use that number to buy shingles. A sloped roof has a significantly larger surface area than the flat ceiling beneath it.

Roof pitch (slope) is expressed as a ratio of vertical rise over horizontal run (e.g., a 4/12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches vertically for every 12 inches horizontally). The steeper the roof, the larger the actual surface area. Our calculator automatically applies standard pitch multipliers to your footprint to determine the true roof area. Don't Forget the Waste Factor Allowance

No roof can be installed with zero waste. Shingles must be cut at the edges (rakes and eaves), valleys, and around penetrations like chimneys and vents. The offcuts are often unusable. Professional roofers always calculate a waste factor:

  • 5% to 10% Waste: Ideal for simple gable roofs with no valleys or dormers.
  • 15% Waste: The industry standard for typical residential roofs (hip roofs) with one or two valleys.
  • 20% Waste: Recommended for complex, heavily chopped-up roofs with multiple dormers, skylights, hips, and valleys.

Other Roofing Materials You Will Need

While calculating your shingle bundles is the most expensive part, a proper roof replacement requires a complete system of materials. You will also need to estimate:

  • Underlayment (Felt or Synthetic): Sold in rolls (usually covering 4 squares each). You will need enough to cover the entire square footage of the roof.
  • Ice and Water Shield: A waterproof membrane required along the eaves (bottom edge) and in all valleys. Check local building codes, as northern climates require it to extend 24 inches inside the exterior wall line.
  • Starter Shingles: Installed along the eaves and rakes to seal the edges and provide an adhesive strip for the first row of shingles. Measure the linear perimeter of your roof to determine how many bundles you need.
  • Ridge Cap Shingles: Special flexible shingles that cover the peaks (ridges) and hips of the roof. Measure the linear length of all ridges and hips to calculate.
  • Drip Edge Flashing: Metal flashing installed along the entire perimeter to direct water into the gutters and away from the fascia board.
  • Roofing Nails: Typically, you will need about 320 nails per square (using 4 nails per shingle). High-wind areas may require 6 nails per shingle.
